Founder’s Favourites: Somerset
A round up of the best places to go in Somerset

Up until the age of 19 when I left home to go and study fashion design, I lived in Somerset. At this point in my life, Somerset felt like a sleepy, slow paced town with a complete lack of opportunity. Fast forward 5 years and I’m living in London, working my first fashion job and homesick for the countryside. You can’t have it all, but I feel fortunate that I’m able to come back whenever that feeling comes over me.

FIG I. The Trading Post farm shop, full of local produce
Over the years there has been a rise in incredible local businesses and restaurants opening up, putting Somerset firmly on the map for one of the best places to visit outside of London. You don’t get far online without a guide popping up, but I generally find it’s always the same places. On Instagram I’ve shared my favourite gardens to visit when I’m home. But here on Sow Notes I thought I’d share a few more local places that I absolutely love and would send any friend coming to visit.
Restaurant
Holm in South Petherton. A dangerously close walk from a relatives house, means this is a firm favourite amongst my family. The best locally sourced food, and just a great place to spend time.

Pub
Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton St George is my favourite pub - village vibes but with an excellent Sunday roast. A good garden is also a must especially when it gets busy. You can also stay here which I’ve never needed to do - but would definitely consider it if my Mum’s guest room was fully booked.
Antiques
There used to be the most incredible antiques market in Crewkerne that I found so many gems over the years, unfortunately that’s gone now and I’m gutted about it. So I’ve moved on to Horton Antiques which has a really beautiful curation of pieces with the backdrop of the Horton Manor House.

Farm Shop
Teals, we go there almost every time we head home back to London, stocking up on goodies. The Trading Post is also great and I love getting my family a few treats as a thank you for hosting us.
Shopping
My shopping mainly consists of garden centres, but for true independant shops I love Frome. Bath is also perfect for interiors - I wouldn’t turn down a visit to either of these places.

Dream Somerset Day
First stop is heading to Barrington Bakery for a coffee and a pastry with my Mum and Dad. Then popping into Barrington Court - my favourite garden and grounds. They also have the most amazing second-hand book shop, so an hour spent in there - not being rushed is perfect. Then finishing off the day with a summers evening, post dinner, dog walk across the fields behind my parents house watching the sun go down.
