Closing Season: Spring

A seasonal round up of events, observations and favourites from Founder Jess

With Summer Solstice on June 21st fast approaching, it’s the perfect time to reflect on Spring and take a moment to appreciate those small moments.

Spring has been particularly busy for Sow Society. As we only launched in April, it feels like a lot has happened already. We spend so much time looking forwards, but it’s important to look back and reflect. So I’m rounding up the past few months with some of my favourite moments.

This Spring I was lucky enough to be staying in the woods in West Sussex when the bluebells were in full bloom. Every year I find it tricky to time, even looking back in my phone camera roll to see what time of year it happened previously so I don’t miss it. This year though, I really hit the jackpot. There was almost a carpet of bluebells around every corner and it never seemed to end. I took hundreds of photos, but this one is my favourite and you can just about see how far they travel.

The first Edit going live was a big moment this Spring. I actually tweaked the flowers at the last minute because I’d picked too many dark elements. I’m glad I did because adding some lighter colours worked so much better. It shows that sometimes you just have to go with your gut and if somethings not right even at the last minute - it’s worth changing. Thank you to everyone for supporting our Edits so far, we have a very exciting one planned to mark the end of the season!

Every year I tell myself the blossom can’t get much better, and without fail, each year it feels like it does. My husband is pretty sick of me talking about it at this point, but here we are still going. Our local park was pretty major this year, as a place I visit daily (and sometimes even twice a day thanks to dog walks) it felt like the sea of white blossom was constantly growing - and amongst the grey and gloomy skies the trees were like shiny beacons of hope. It’s the most magical sight after coming out the depths of winter and something I eagerly await every year.

This one really comes into it’s own in Spring and that’s finally being able to visit garden centres again. We’re currently renovating our garden and there’s not a weekend that goes by where I don’t want to be visiting one and spending £££. This deserves a post of it’s own because I’m a sucker for a good garden centre and I feel like people have very strong opinions on what makes one good. For example, do you require a cafe? My in-laws took us to Hilperton in Wiltshire and I have to say it was pretty impressive.

I’m so glad that you have been loving our Guides here on Sow Notes, there are quite a few now if you’ve not yet taken a look. Everything from Conditioning, Vase Life and even Choosing Your Vessel is covered. My personal favourite is our latest edition - Floral Mechanics, a really easy guide to using more sustainable materials to create arrangements.

I’m sad that this is really the end of the season for the Fritillaria, I’ve used it a lot this in both the green and dark plum colours, they are just such good flowers for adding impact. But there is also something so Spring like about them, I’m not sure whether it’s the bell shaped flowers that remind me of a snowdrop or the height of them that reminds me of an allium. If you’re not familiar with the flower, then take a look at our flower focus series.
