Flower Focus: Euphorbia

From early spring through to early summer, Euphorbia’s large, greenish-yellow flower heads come into their own. Their vivid lime tones offer an early hint of the season ahead, while the contrasting blue-grey foliage below creates a striking, dual-toned effect that adds depth and visual impact.

Family: Euphorbiaceae

Working best as an architectural accent rather than a soft filler, Euphorbia brings shape, movement, and vibrant colour to a design. Its presence feels both contemporary and timeless, making it a natural choice for gardens and floral arrangements alike.

This particular species is Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii. With around 2,000 species, Euphorbia is one of the largest and most diverse plant groups, ranging from annuals and perennials to shrubs and succulents.

Euphorbia stems release a milky sap that can irritate the skin, so it’s best to wear gloves when cutting and conditioning them. To protect the rest of your arrangement, place them in their own water initially, allowing the sap to settle before introducing them to other stems.
