The Making of Summer
Seasonal observations

At Sow Society the seasons are incredibly important. Because we work with nature rather than against it, they decide what we use for our Edits and client work. So in the lead-up to the beginning of the next season, we take time and observe.

Observing the changes in the season prepares us for what’s ahead and inspires what we choose to work with. It’s not the most conventional way of choosing flowers, but we think it brings the best results.
Our growers are obsessed with the weather, and rightly so as it’s ever changing and impacts the materials they can provide us with. Wind, sun, rain, everything impacts the environment and it’s completely out of our control.
The heat in recent weeks has caused a lot of stress on the land, the flowers and for the growers. It’s not only particularly hot but incredibly dry. It’s a stark reminder that our climate is changing and that we need to make more conscious choices, a prime example being our flowers.
During these abundant months there really is no reason to be buying flowers cheaply from supermarkets. Seeking out a local grower or florist is an even better way to not only support local businesses, but ensure that your flowers haven’t travelled miles in the blazing heat. Imagine how much longer they’ll last in your vase at home.

The flowers we’re most excited about are Scabiosa in varying colours, Sunflowers and Daucus Carota or Wild Carrot. All creating that wild Summer feeling, like they were picked directly from a wild meadow.
For the foliage, we can’t not mention Smoke Bush, it’s a textural heaven that’s very popular amongst florists but grows wonderfully here in the UK. And of course Fennel and Ammi, which adds subtle hues of colour within an arrangement.
At Sow Society we particularly love grasses and are constantly learning about the varieties available to us. This Summer we’re excited to be working with it for a special occasion.

The Summer equinox 21st June to 23rd September, is likely the most coveted of all seasons. There is a sweet carelessness about this time of year that only warmth and light can bring. Staying up late, not taking a jacket, embracing days that have no real purpose other than to be outside.
The signs of the beginning and the end of the season are more blurry than others, as late Spring and early Autumn can feel so similar. Yet nothing can compare to the true height of Summer. The sun beaming down, grass crispy under your feet, the sound of crickets in the evening breeze.
Consider this your reminder to sit and observe. Romanticise the everyday moments.
